Microwave components principally developed for radar and communication purposes may be used in a number of industrial applications where some physical phenomena may be applied to a waveguide system to cause variation in the high frequency electromagnetic field which may be interpreted in mechanical, chemical or physical terms. The method outlined in this paper makes use of radiation from a waveguide aperture to measure the proximity of a reflecting surface.
