Abstract :
A digital electronic circuit was designed to calculate the exact two-dimensional position of markers in the field of view of a charged-coupled device (CCD) camera. The circuit is composed of four building blocks: (1) a video sync separator, (2) two banks of counters to calculate the horizontal (X) and vertical (Y) position of each marker, (3) a threshold discriminator, and (4) a buffer/memory bank that holds the position information for eventual communication with a personal computer (PC). The circuit is interfaced to the PC via its parallel port and an I/O card for control and data communication. Testing of the circuit revealed that it is capable of achieving a spatial resolution of 1.2 mm along with a temporal resolution of 15 Hz for a camera field of view of 16×11.5 cm
