Abstract :
A sequence of radar traverses on ice stream B in west Antarctica produced detailed images showing specular reflections from temporary horizontal water layers injected by a hot-water drilling operation. The water layers were observed on two separate occasions at depths of 840 and 780 m. This is the first radar observation of water injected deep into an Antarctic glacier. The horizontal openings that received the water are an unexpected structural form at such great depths.
