Abstract :
A quite inexpensive instrument for cervical auscultation is described. Provided you already have a laptop computer, an optional MP3 recorder/player and a copy of your preferred sound analyzing software (e.g. PRAAT), then you just need a common microphone (like one of those ready to be connected to the computer) in a proper encapsulation (described). A complete, effective, reliable and state of the art instrument for cervical auscultation, especially suited for dysphagia studies, is readily obtained in this way. Only the microphone and the MP3 recorder are needed for a pocket-size everyday recording, playing and monitoring, in an ambulatory environment. Digital sound files from MP3 recorder may be uploaded on the laptop computer for analyzing them offline.
