Abstract
The author addresses the fact that far more health-care resources are devoted to acute-care rescue than to preventive medical technologies. He identifies the reasons why this is so, focusing on the fact that beneficiaries of rescue are identifiable individuals, whereas those of prevention are statistical. He concludes that the most compelling consideration in favor of rescue over prevention could be its compatibility with respect for individual liberty.<>
