Abstract :
A novel saddle point variational principle for the scalar wave equation allowing for discontinuous trial functions is proposed. The principle explains why some methods approach the propagation constant beta from above, rather than below, and assists in the better understanding of some important approximate methods. The results are applied to the rib waveguide, but may be used more generally within optoelectronics.
