Abstract :
A possible mechanism for the explanation of the increase of extraordinary refractive index in LiNbO3 caused by the proton-exchange process is reported. It is proposed that the change in spontaneous polarisation which can vary the refractive index of the crystal through the electro-optic effect, may be a main factor in the production of such an index change.
