This two-part article discusses the Huge Microphone Array (HMA) project, an ongoing effort to build a real-time 512-microphone array system and develop algorithms for it. This system lays the groundwork for a wide range of teleconferencing, entertainment, and surveillance applications. In part 1, the authors described system planning and design.
