Abstract :
The discovery of high-temperature superconductors in 1987 opened new opportunities in the design of power supply equipment. The advantages of a transformer with high-temperature superconducting windings have been discussed and presented in several papers in the past. The design of transformers depends on the operation requirements and the installed position in the power network. In this paper the fundamental equations for the design of transformers are discussed and modified in such a way that an optimization of HTS transformers can be successfully studied. The best design in terms of low load losses or low no-load losses is calculated for different power transformers considering the volume of the transformer and the impedance voltage. The resulting “growth laws” are discussed and analyzed
