Abstract :
A cascaded preamplifier configuration has been introduced using two erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs). A low noise figure of 4.5 dB and a high net gain of 27.0 dB, at a signal wavelength of 1.553 mu m, have led to the highest reported receiver sensitivity to date of -31.1 dBm (606 photon/bit). This represents an improvement of 18.8 dB over the sensitivity without an optical amplifier.
