Abstract :
Teachers in the United States earned high marks when it comes to their knowledge of science, but they are failing to adequately promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers, according to a recent survey by the American Society of Quality (ASQ) and Harris Interactive. Overall, 84% of students polled in grades K–12 said that their science teachers deserve at least a “B” grade when it comes to their knowledge, with 55% of teachers receiving an “A” (Fig. 1). However, 63% of youth report that their teachers are not effectively talking to them about engineering careers, and 42% say that teachers are inadequate at showing them how science can be used in a career. The online survey included 1,269 youth from the United States, ages 8–17.
