Abstract
The effect of particle scattering on the separation of a two-phase mixture of material caused by interacting particles within a falling curtain is analyzed for an open-gradient magnetic-separation (OGMS) system. The dependence of the scattering on parameters such as feed-layer thickness, free fall height and deflection angle of the magnetic phase is examined. The properties of the falling particle stream and the extraction of the magnetic phase from it are described theoretically. The theory is compared with experimental results, and the important parameters determining the performance of OGMS systems are discussed
