Abstract :
The compatibility of the MAC (multiplex analog component) decoder, intended for eventual use with HDTV (high-definition television) pictures of 16/9 aspect ratio, with current 4/3 TV pictures is considered. A system is described that will be included in a conventional MAC decoder to provide aspect ratio adaptation at the receiver side. The hardware structure of the MAC decoder, which will allow two ways of displaying the picture when the program is broadcast in 16/9, is presented
