Abstract
The electromagnetic response of a long cylinder is considered for arbitrary excitation by an external source. The electrical and the magnetic properties are characterised by uni-axial immitance tensors with principal axes parallel to the axis of the cylinder. For a given spectral component of the excitation, the relevant expressions for the surface impedance are derived and various special cases are pointed out. The results have application to the nondestructive testing of wire ropes and cables.
