Abstract
This special issue presents many exciting and surprising developments in signal and image processing owing to sparse representations. While the technology is new, much of the intellectual heritage of these recent developments can be traced back generations. This foreword sketches the ??prehistory of sparsity,?? a fascinating range of early discoveries ranging from pure mathematics to oil exploration to biological vision.
