Abstract
This research work focuses on a novel methodology which is termed as “sleeping pill protocol”. The main intention is to force the nodes in the network to sleep state when they are not participating in the network functions. In this paper, the protocol is evaluated in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) by real world measurements. This research work focuses on the proof of concept in improving the life time of WSN network especially in the multi-hop networks. This work not only proves our methodology but also an increase in the life time of the network. This work also benchmarks the performance of our methodology both indoor and as well as outdoor environments. Results show that by using this protocol, the life time of the network is increased to 66% in indoor environment, where the hop distance is 3m. While increasing the hop distance to 10 times than indoor environments, the protocol saved 27% for outdoor environments. Furthermore, this protocol works effectively in long time based events.
