Abstract :
It is widely acknowledged that there is a productivity gap between the UK and the US manufacturing industries. Some of the key factors that influence this gap are investigated. These are: US firms benefit from a much larger, less open homogenised domestic market place; US manufacturers are exploiting maximum benefits from modern manufacturing practices such as lean manufacturing; US manufacturing employees earn more than their UK counterparts; teamwork; and investment and R&D.
