Abstract :
Improvements in the insertion loss of optical connectors by the orientation technique, in which a fiber-core offset is aligned with the key direction of a connector, are analyzed quantitatively. A statistical distribution of insertion losses is derived from the probability theory. Excellent agreement is demonstrated between the theory and the experimental results using single-mode fiber connectors. The result shows that the orientation technique can improve the percentage of insertion losses not exceeding 0.5 dB to 99.7% from 86.5% for random concatenation.<>
