Abstract
An efficient design method for three-dimensional digital filters using the outer product expansion is proposed. Specifications of three-dimensional digital filters are decomposed into specifications of one-dimensional digital filters by the outer product expansion, and then each specification of one-dimensional digital filters is designed. This procedure can be applied to both space- and frequency-domain specifications. Diagonal symmetries of three-dimensional digital filters can be exploited to reduce computations in the design procedure. Since the parallel separable structure produced by this method has high parallelism, regularity, and modularity, it is suitable for parallel and VLSI implementation of 3-D digital filters
