Abstract
Internet appliances were conceived as simpler cousins of the PC with no hard drive and a minimal operating system that permitted almost instant bootup. Consumers could access their applications, such as e-mail and appointment calendars, via a Web browser. The simple browser interface was expected to make appliances more popular with technophobes. The paper discusses the three primary types of Internet appliances and their marketplace performance
