Abstract
The type of magnetic field measurement required is first described. Two important methods are distinguished, measurements when the ship is moving and measurements when it is stationary. A description of the instruments finally developed for each method is given. The errors of the various systems are discussed. A brief account is given of obsolete and experimental instruments. The paper concludes with a description of the methods used to place the underwater units on the sea-bed.
