Abstract :
By coincidence, two of the papers in this issue deal with issues of goals and values — from quite different perspectives and for different subsets of the total population of people engaged in RD&E (Research, Development, and Engineering). Toren looks at differences in values among scientists with respect to the institution of science itself versus its role in a larger social scheme. Harrison sheds light on current conceptions of the differences in goal orientations (to a large extent reflecting value differences) between managers and scientists.
