Abstract :
A straightforward mathematical analysis of the noise contribution of a phase/frequency detector in a PLL frequency synthesiser is presented. A figure of merit is derived which allows comparison of different phase/frequency detectors and an accurate estimate of their performance in given configurations. Experimental results show excellent agreement with theory
