Abstract :
A rule-based expert system is designed for steady-state stability analysis of a power system. In the proposed expert system approach, the key variables which affect steady-state stability most are first identified through discussions with operators and engineers. A number of offline studies (both eigenvalue analyses and time-domain simulations) are also conducted to help identify important system variables. A set of decision rules relating these key variables to system stability are then established and stored in the knowledge base. With these inference rules and system states at hand, the expert system performs steady-state stability analysis through deductive reasoning. Since the expert system approach does not require eigenvalue computation in making decisions, it is more efficient than the conventional method of steady-state stability analysis in real-time situations. The expert system was applied to steady-state stability analysis of the Taiwan power system. It was found that the expert system is useful to inexperienced operators, because of the knowledge of experienced operators and offline simulation studies stored in the expert system
