Abstract
For well over 10 years it has been known that oscillating magnetic fields, if allowed to penetrate the body, can cause physiological changes that stimulate bone growth. Since the mid-1970s the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has been used to heal fractures that otherwise refuse to knit, with success in almost 100 000 patients. The PEMF machinery is bulky and power-hungry, however, and if a large bone such as the tibia (shinbone) or hip is being treated, the patient must sit close to a wall outlet for up to 12 hours a day.
