Abstract
Television broadcasting directly from satellites to homes would not only improve picture quality, it would bring programs with stereo sound to many millions in remote areas, and provide more program diversity, at lower cost, to viewers already served by terrestrial transmitters and cable. A few years ago, experts believed that direct satellite broadcasting was imminent and that viewers around the world would be enjoying its benefits by now.
