Abstract :
Implantable antennas for medical applications have been given continued interest due to the demand for smaller antennas. One major application for implantable antennas is in biotelemetry. Biotelemetry can be used for the continuous monitoring of a patient´s physiological parameters (glucose level, blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, etc.) and for early diagnosis of disease. An implantable medical telemetry system may contain both a medical sensor for measuring physiological parameters and an antenna to transmit the measured data. In many implantable biotelemetry devices, the antenna itself constitutes a large percentage of the overall volume of the device. Therefore, reductions in size of the antenna give appreciable contributions to the reduction of the overall size of the biotelemetry device. Reducing the size implantable devices is quite desirable as this reduces the rate of complications from the implantation and reduces the potential scarring or disturbance to the body associated with medical implants. A desired biotelemetry device would be so small that it has a marginal impact on the body yet still performs its function of health monitoring.
