Abstract :
A family of tests for improper codes is given. These tests can be used in cases where the complete weight distribution of the code is unknown. It was found that knowledge of the number of minimum weight codewords can be used to greatly increase the effectiveness of the asymptotic Varshamov-Gilbert test. Further improvement is possible as more is known about the number of other weight codewords
