A survey of cathode-ray-tube problems in service applications, with special reference to radar. Part 1: Royal Air Force applications

This survvey covers the field in three sections, Royal Air Force, Army and Royal Navy, stresssng the problems peculiar to each. Changes in display technique are traced from those involving the simplest equipment to those giving the easiest interpretation of data. The special requirements associated with radar displays concerned with Air Interception, Air Navigation, Precise Fire Control and the Plan Position Indication of ships, aircraft, towns and the fall of shot are enumerated. The need for large projected displays and a particular solution, that using the dark-trace tube, are discussed. The difficulties of photography of cathode-ray-tube traces are mentioned and the visibility problems associated with cathode-ray-tube pictures are analysed to show how choice of tube is effected and the importance of the psychological aspect of displays. Brief descriptions are given of some examples illustrating the versatility of the cathode-ray tube.
