Radiation from receivers

The paper discusses the problem of radiation from receivers, with particular reference to installations used on board ship. The interference to normal peace-time radio communication services is considered. During wartime the problem became particularly acute in view of the possibility of receiver radiation being used by the enemy as a means of determining the position and course of Allied shipping. Details are given of the Statutory Rules and Orders which were promulgated to control the level of radiation permissible from ships´ receivers, and the problem of developing a technique suitable for checking individual installations for compliance with the limits laid down in these regulations is discussed. Examples of practical testing installations are given together with details of new receiver designs and modifications to existing equipments which ensured a sufficiently low and safe level of radiation. The possible effect on post-war designs and installations is discussed, bearing in mind the probable growth and expansion of radio communication services and navigational aids to be provided on board ship.
