Abstract
The explosive growth of the Internet has given IP routing new challenges. Innovative solutions have been proposed to solve the current router bottleneck by evolving to a tighter integration of IP and ATM, an approach called shortcut routing. This article categorizes the current IP over ATM shortcut proposals and identifies a number of issues. However, while IP and ATM routing and forwarding functions must be more closely integrated, a differentiation according to type of traffic seems advantageous; hence the need to evolve to an IP over ATM dual-mode routing model
