Abstract :
In this study, mechanical alloying (MA) was used to synthesise Al-Fe/TiB2 nanocomposites using aluminium, ferrotitanium and acid boric as raw materials. The powders were mixed and subjected to MA in an attritor ball mill under argon (Ar) atmosphere. Then, the milled powders were heat-treated under Ar atmosphere. The phase transformation, microstructure and morphology of MA powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the heat-treated powders lead to the in situ formation of nanosized TiB2 particles in the Al matrix with an average grain size of 45 nm. It was also found that after heat-treating, TiB2 phase and other intermetallics such as Al13Fe4 and Al3Ti have been formed.
