Abstract
The effects of electrical breakdown on solid surfaces are of interest to electrical engineers. A recently developed simple method of investigating solid-surface topography using nematic liquid crystals is now successfully employed to reveal such effects in remarkable details. The possible mechanisms of the nematic molecular alignment responsible for the features observed are pointed out.
