Abstract :
An optimum design for the multiple-phase-shift distributed feedback (MPS-DFB) laser with three phase shifts in the corrugation was established theoretically. It was shown that the optimised MPS-DFB laser gives sufficient threshold gain difference and uniform field distribution even for strong coupling. Therefore, the long cavity MPS-DFB laser is expected to give stable single-longitudinal-mode operation at high injection levels and give a minimum linewidth of less than 500 kHz
