Abstract
Of two equally competent professional engineers, the one who can write well has an unbeatable advantage. If he publishes two or three papers on a relatively narrow subject, he gets national recognition as an expert, and his silent colleague does not, even if he knows just as much about the subject. In fact, the writer is bound to get preferential treatment from his immediate superiors, even though they are aware that the other engineer is just as capable in every other respect.
