Abstract :
A model study is presented of high-pressure, oil-filled termination failure due to the sudden loss of oil pressure on the energized line. Nitrogen saturated oil was found to have a very low internal breakdown strength under vacuum. Injecting sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas into the oil at low pressures prevented internal breakdown of the oil under vacuum. The study indicates that injecting SF 6 will help solve the termination failure problem
