Abstract
Fibre optic polarisers and polarising beam splitters using surface plasmons in thin metal films have been realised in highly birefringent fibre as reported by several authors. An analysis is made of the effect of misalignment of the fibre axes relative to the plane of the metal film and the consequences on device specification. The full measured specifications for a 1550 nm polariser and polarising beam splitter are presented.
