Abstract :
The advantages that the semiconductor laser offers over gas or solid-state lasers are presented, and the multilayer structure of semiconductor lasers is described. Attention is also given to some of the new growth techniques that are now being used. The author then describes how semiconductor lasers are being used in lightwave communications technology. The description covers propagating modes and photodetectors.
