Abstract
The authors describe a 1 Gbit/s free space line-of-sight infrared link operating over 40 m with a power margin of 10 dB, and present experimental results of its operation. The implications of atmospheric attenuation, particularly by fog, on system availability are considered. They also discuss possible telecomms applications for such a system
