A rack-mounted 2.5 Gbit/s 16×16 frequency-routing-type ATM switch (FRONTIER-NET) using an optical-buffer expansion scheme has been developed. Experimental testing of a prototype showed bit-error-free operation of optical-cell routing and buffering
