Abstract :
With the development in the 1970s and 1980s of fibre-reinforced composite materials such as carbon, Arimid and glass fibres, interest in the potential of flywheels in energy storage systems was rekindled. The author describes how it is the use of these materials in combination that gave the technology a potential way forward.
