Abstract
This paper is adapted from the author´s speech at the Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium, January, 2001. The author discusses decision-making, hazards, technological upsets, and the social contexts within which reliability decisions are made. Suggestions are given on the areas where those in reliability and maintainability can help in establishing social policy for products and processes
