Abstract :
Most of the network operators are looking into how to upgrade their existing network infrastructures in a cost-effective manner. As packet optical convergence has been a major trend in optical networking, network operators are interested in packet optical convergence technologies. POTN (Packet Optical Transport Network) is a recently emerging technology that integrates optical, circuit and packet layer into a single converged device. It enhances bandwidth efficiency by optimizing multiple layer network and reduces operational costs compared with separated network architecture. In order to verify the feasibility of POTN, we designed core network architecture based on POTN for building a unified core transport network. We carried out intensive laboratory tests and a nationwide field trial. This paper presents our approach for deploying packet optical converged core network. And the paper introduces our trial experiences and shows key considerations for POTN deployment from a network operator perspective.
