Abstract
Brittle fracture in solids has attracted the attention of engineers and physicists because of both its technological interest and inherent scientific curiosity. Bridging the different approaches requires extensive experimental investigations and multiscale computational schemes. The authors discuss the microscale processes that control the development of fast fracture in brittle materials
