Abstract
Wind tunnels utilize some of the largest drives in the world. The current NASA-NTF wind tunnel project, by replacing its aging fan drive system with a new adjustable speed drive (ASD) using a single 135000 HP synchronous motor, will employ the largest adjustable speed drive system in the world. High voltage DC transmission and traditional ASD technology, and utilization of large rotating machinery design and manufacturing techniques, makes this system possible
