Abstract
This article on Michael Faraday is a reprint from Scanning the Past, a history of electrical engineering and its pioneers printed by the IEEE, The book contains James E. Brittain\´s monthly historical articles from the Proceedings of the IEEE. James Brittain is an IEEE Fellow elected in 1987, "for development of the field of electrical history." He was Chairman of the IEEE History Committee in 1978/1979 and 1988/1989. Throughout his career, he has served in editorial positions of the Proceedings of the IEEE, Transactions, and Editorial Board of the IEEE Spectrum. He received a Ph.D. of History of Science and Technology in 1970 from Case Western Reserve University. He was at the Georgia Institute of Technology School of History, Technology, and Society when he retired in 1995 to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where he continues to write for publication. This article was originally published in the Proceedings of the IEEE, vol 79, Sept. 1991
