Abstract :
One of the most important parameters gained from radar measurements is the target range. The knowledge of this quantity is directly or indirectly supposed for distance measurement and target tracking, radar imaging, super resolution techniques, vital sign monitoring and others. While in the case of narrowband radar, the range is uniquely defined, its estimation under UWB conditions require deeper considerations and refinements. The high range resolution and accuracy of UWB-measurements often surmounts typical dimensions of involved bodies as antennas and targets. This may lead to some conflicts of defining and estimating an exact range value. The paper gives a summary of deterministic and random effects affecting the range estimation by UWB radar.
