Abstract
Discusses perceptions and aims which motivate young people when they choose their careers. It is emphasized that an appreciation of technology has to be implanted at the vulnerable school age, well before university entry: the crucial age was put as early as 12 to 13, which is when `O´ level options are chosen. More emphasis has to be given to the human aspects, especially communication and team work. It is important to attract not only those who plan to become professional engineers but also many who expect to spend their lives in other environments such as the civil service, banking, politics etc
