Abstract :
In this paper, an approach for diagnosis of power system fault using sequence component analysis is described. The Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is generally used for Smart grid application in order to monitor the different running states of the system. In its working principle, a time synchronized samples of voltage and current signals of a bus is essential for different state estimation. Now we want to extend the working of the PMU towards protection schemes by utilizing the samples collected by PMU. The proposed work is simulated by modeling of a transmission line with PMU placed at the bus ends and creating different faults within the transmission lines in Real time digital simulator (RTDS). The samples of the PMU are collected and stored in a file. From the data of the file, the positive, negative and zero sequence components are estimated. A classification table is made from which the actual nature of the fault can be detected for protection purposes.
