Abstract :
The present paper concerns the history of use of the system of wireless telegraphy for practical purposes, designed by a Russian physicist Alexander Popov. The paper draws attention to the causes of this event. Based on preserved and actually existing historical documents it is shown, that the information radiolink Hogland - Kuutsalo made by A. S. Popov to carry out a rescue operation for the battleship \´General-Admiral Apraksin", is an example, first in the world, of radio communication application for the needs of the society. This fact gives grounds to assert that the practical use of radio communication took place in Russia earlier than in other countries.
